Nikiya Mathis made Broadway history as the first wig designer to receive a Special Tony Award for Jaja’s African Hair Braiding by Jocelyn Bioh. A classically trained actress with an M.F.A. from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, she has recurred as “N’Kiyah Franklin” in Power Book III: Raising Kanan (Starz) and appeared in Snowfall (FX), The Blacklist, Chicago Med, BrainDead, New Amsterdam, Blue Bloods, and The Night Of. Her Broadway wig design credits include School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play; The Imaginary Invalid; Cats: The Jellicle Ball; Liberation, Purpose, Home, The Heart of Rock and Roll, Once Upon a One More Time, Death of a Salesman, Topdog/Underdog, and Chicken & Biscuits. Upcoming: Imitation Of Life and Warriors (the new Lin-Manuel Miranda musical). She has earned the Obie Award, two Henry Hewes Design Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, and Black Women on Broadway’s Kathy A. Perkins Award and teaches nationwide.
