"Key Largo" Opening Night at the Geffen Playhouse

  • Patrick Brown

Key Largo received its grand opening night at the Geffen Playhouse, featuring Stephen Borrello, Joely Fisher, Andy Garcia, Rose McIver, Louis Mustillo, Danny Pino, Tony Plana, Richard Riehle, and Bradley Snedeker.

Key Largo is a bold reimagining of Maxwell Anderson’s Broadway hit that became the iconic noir film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Returning from World War II, disillusioned Frank McCloud travels to a hotel in Key Largo to pay his respects to the widow of a fallen friend. What McCloud doesn’t count on is an entirely different battle with mobsters who have overtaken the hotel, led by the ruthless Johnny Rocco (Academy Award nominee Andy Garcia). As a hurricane barrels toward the Keys, McCloud must face his demons in order to take down a monster.

“It was a fantastic performance tonight,” said Associate Artistic Director Amy Levinson. “This cast and crew have worked incredibly hard to deliver this big, beautiful production and we are so proud to have it in our season.” Directed by Tony winner Doug Hughes (Doubt), Key Largo boasts a Tony-winning design team including John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Linda Cho (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), as well as Alex Hawthorn (sound design), Kaitlyn Pietras and Jason H. Thompson (projection design).

Following the performance, cast, crew, and donors to the Geffen Playhouse celebrated at Napa Valley Grille and enjoyed a Cuban inspired menu by Executive Chef Ben Diaz.
